Upstairs Concert: Louis d\'Heudières & Lara Agar + Weston Olencki

Louis d'Heudières & Lara Agar:
Louis d'Heudières is a composer and sound artist based in Hamburg. He works across the mediums of writing, live performance and installation to speculatively (re)imagine pasts, presents and futures of musical production and reception. His work has been performed, shown or broadcast in everything from underground corners of small DIY scenes to state-funded international festivals, galleries and museums. It has been described as “humorous, perplexing and disturbing” (The Wire) and “like a revival of some long-forgotten children's game” (The Telegraph).

Lara’s work is rooted in contemporary classical and experimental music making, writing for acoustic instruments and often blending electronics, found sounds and sampling. Her interests lie in the accidental, the found, indeterminacy, messiness of stuff and collaborative music making. Recent work includes projects with choreographer Anthony Matsena, the National Dance Company of Wales, Juliet Fraser + Mark Knoop, the LSO, Plus Minus Ensemble, EXAUDI and Quatuor Bozzini, in venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Barbican, Sadler’s Wells and at festivals such as Music We’d Like to Hear and Oxford Lieder Festival. Lara’s solo debut EP Solstice was released on October House Records in October 2023.

Louis d’Heudières and Lara Agar present a body of work they have developed since 2020, inspired from Old English myths and poems written at a time when East Anglia (the region they both grew up in) was an independent kingdom. Using a mixture of self-programmed synths, violin textures, field recordings, and autotuned vocals, their project seeks to find thresholds between new and old, imagine lands filled with hope and loss, and conjure up alternative timelines in a lost mothertongue.

Weston Olencki:
Weston Olencki is a composer, musician, and audio engineer originally from South Carolina, living now in Berlin. They are currently making work focused around questions of instrumental music and its contexts/constructs, various mediated practices of listening and improvisation, and the technological, material, and cultural histories of vernacular art-making. Their recent music deals with the non-linear relationships and unexpected resonances between experimental sound, geography, historicity, and (mostly American) musical traditions. They have presented work at the Borealis Festival, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Lampo, Black Mountain College, Roulette Intermedium, Jalopy Theatre, among others. Various recording projects have been released by Carrier Records, Dinzu Artefacts, SUPERPANG, Tripticks Tapes, PAGANS, Full Spectrum, Hideous Replica, Sound Holes, and Astral Spirits. Their latest recording/performance project, Old Time Music, was featured on Bandcamp Daily’s Best Experimental Music of 2022.

Weston Olencki presents new work off an upcoming release: "all my father's clocks" for autoharp and electronics
