Julius Eastman Project

The American composer, pianist, singer and performance artist Julius Eastman (1940-1990) has only been rediscovered and celebrated by a younger generation of musicians in recent years.

Thanks to his innovative arrangements and his political provocation, he was one of the most dazzling figures in the emerging minimal music scene in New York in the 1970s. Eastman was one of the first to combine minimal music compositional techniques with pop elements. His vision of "organic music" and his creative openness gave new impetus to the minimal music movement. He often gave his pieces titles with provocative political intent, such as Evil Nigger and Gay Guerrilla, and has been acclaimed following new performances and reissues of his music.

The first performance of Julius Eastman's "Stay On It", performed by an all-female ensemble of eight, took place in October 2021 as part of the Week-End Fest. The ensemble will perform another piece “Femenine” from the composer's repertoire on their forthcoming tour, which also just took a two-day residency at London's renowned Cafe OTO.
