Basit o7: Gilb’R + Vlada + Ozan Maral
22:00 Ozan Maral
Gilb'R is a man of many projects : Versatile Records label boss, half of Chateau Flight with I:Cube, producer of The Big Crunch Theory with Lisa Li Lund, member of Aladdin with Nicolas Ker, rising solo producer and encyclopedic DJ.
When someone sticks with a certain kind of activity through its highs and lows for the most part of his life, you can definitely call it a passion. With Gilbert Cohen alias Gilb’R, you would even have to speak of a calling. From his days as a musical programmer and DJ for the legendary Parisian station Radio Nova to his productions, remixes and partnership with I:Cube as Chateau Flight and maybe most important with Versatile Records.
The history of modern French electronic and dance music would look very different without this man and his label. Debuting with the established house classic Sunshine People, it soon spread into all kinds of directions. Versatile the fundamental podium for I:Cube’s sound kaleidoscope, the Chateau Flight project, Joakim’s various skinning actions and artists like Zombie Zombie or Etienne Jaumet. Sticking to his love for DJ culture with 12”s and Gilb’r wider and open-minded approach to music with the album projects, Versatile really lives up to his name.
That might be difficult to sustain, but every adventure needs great thrills and Gilb’r is definitely still in the middle of one. Continuously playing versatile DJ sets from Brooklyn to Bombay and back again, you can catch him playing heavy techno and house sets as often as free-spirited dance music affairs, and if the vibe and place is right, all of it thrown together in one melting pot. According to music journalist wisdom, Gilb’r is simply what they call a DJ’s DJ.
“We just never stopped being music nerds.” And we should be glad for that.
‘Spinning around’ is a definition relevant both to her records and lifestyle - Berlin- based Vlada remains Moscow-attached. More then 15 years of deep dive into worldwide electronic scene resulted in residency in Arma17 and Mutabor club as well as curation of Spell and dreamslesssweet events as a co-founder.
The freedom of music coming out of its aerial nature was transfused to her since
childhood. Vlada started academic piano education at the age of six and can’t stop this
lifetime affair. Growing up around Jazz and Funk melodies from father’s record player tinged her tune with warm and deep colours and on top raised the affection to vinyl esthetics and digging.
The interruption of conventional boundaries in all the senses was empowered by constant traveling. It immersed her perception into different cultural peculiarities and taught to juggle with meanings and styles. Vlada aims to represent eclectic manner where any genre features seem to eliminate and morph to a special type of unity. Yet sensitive and feminine her power is brave enough to give a chance to new unexpected outcomes of improvisation.
Surrounded by music royalty and weirdos since an early age, Ozan Maral out of Istanbul, is a pioneering force to come from the land of four seasons.
Having founded Deform Music record store out of Istanbul’s bohemian quarter Beyoglu, he was installed as the booker at music and art establishment arkaoda where he built and maintained an artistic program of kudos and repute for more than 10 years.
Forever faithful to his experimental, industrial and synth-disco roots, Ozan Maral’s all encompassing vision takes in abstract and minimal sounds that focus on the brighter and more positive ethics of non-commercial dance music.
